Therapy for Work Stress and Burnout in San Francisco
Work may be getting done while the rest of your life feels increasingly difficult to sustain. You may finish the day depleted, keep thinking about work after hours, or find that time off provides little relief.
I’m Nikhil Jain, Psy.D., a California-licensed clinical psychologist. I offer individual therapy for adults experiencing work stress, exhaustion, and difficulty finding a sustainable relationship with responsibility and achievement.
Understanding Burnout
Burnout refers specifically to the effects of sustained workplace stress and is not classified as a medical condition in ICD-11. It can involve exhaustion, increasing distance or cynicism toward work, and a reduced sense of effectiveness.
Exhaustion can also occur alongside other concerns. We will assess your experience rather than assume that every period of fatigue, low motivation, or distress is burnout.
Looking at Both the Workplace and Your Responses
Excessive workload, limited control, unclear expectations, insufficient support, and conflict between your role and your values can contribute to work-related strain. These conditions matter.
We may also examine perfectionism, fear of disappointing others, difficulty asking for help, or a sense that rest must be earned. Therapy provides space to consider how personal patterns and workplace conditions interact, without treating the problem as a failure of resilience.
When Work Follows You Home
You may replay meetings, check messages during personal time, or feel guilty when you are not being productive. Sometimes these responses briefly reduce uncertainty while making it harder to disengage later.
We can explore what keeps that pattern going and practice changes suited to your circumstances. This may include communicating limits, reconsidering commitments, responding differently to self-criticism, or making room for relationships and activities outside work.
Considering Your Options
Therapy does not begin with a predetermined answer about whether you should stay in or leave a job. We can examine your needs, values, resources, and practical constraints.
Some changes may be within your control; others may require workplace support or a larger decision. The work can help you consider those options without expecting you to resolve everything immediately.
What Working Together Can Involve
My approach combines active conversation, psychological insight, and practical work. I ask questions, share observations, and help you examine patterns connected to pressure, achievement, boundaries, and self-worth.
We identify goals relevant to your daily life and review progress together. The pace and focus depend on your circumstances and clinical needs.
In-Person and Online Sessions
I offer individual therapy in San Francisco and online throughout California. Online sessions take place through a secure telehealth platform. Privacy practices and the limits of confidentiality are discussed before treatment begins.
Start With a Consultation
You do not need to have a clear explanation for your exhaustion before reaching out. A free 10–15 minute video consultation provides an opportunity to discuss your concerns, availability, and whether my services may be a suitable fit. It is separate from the first paid therapy session.
Interactive Mind Counseling is a private-pay, out-of-network practice. I do not bill insurance directly. Superbills are available upon request for possible out-of-network reimbursement; reimbursement depends on your plan and is not guaranteed. Fees are discussed before treatment begins and confirmed in writing.
